The present study deals with evaluation of hepatoprotective activity of Pedalium murex (bada gokhru) fruits ethanolic extracts against isoniazide induced hepatotoxicity in rats. Hepatotoxicity in rats was induced by isoniazide (50 mg/kg p.o. for 30 days) and the protective effect of Pedalium murex (200 mg/kg/p.o. and 400 mg/kg/p.o.) was identified by estimating marker enzymes. After 30 days, isoniazide treated rats showed that, there was a significant increment in the level of serum glutamate pyruvate transaminase (SGPT), serum glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase (SGOT), total bilirubin (TB), triglyceride (TG) and total cholesterol (TC) in isoniazid treated rats compare to normal rats. Rats treated with silymarine and Pedalium murex (400 mg/kg) significantly reduced the elevated level of SGOT, SGPT, TB, TG and TC. Pedalium murex (200 mg/kg) did not show a significant reduction in elevated level of TC. Significant in-vivo antioxidant activity was also found with aqueous alcoholic extract. SOD and Glutathione activity was significantly increased and lipid peroxidation was significantly reduced. The results of the present study had shown that the aqueous ethanolic extract of fruits of Pedalium murex has a good antioxidant and effective hepatoprotective activity. The possible mechanism behind its hepatoprotective activity is its antioxidant activity.
